Atlantic City Stands To Gain First Small Casino

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

January 8th, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

In 2010, New Jersey begun passing legislation that would allow smaller casinos to be established in Atlantic City. Hard Rock International is on the brink of becoming the first of these miniature casinos.

On Wednesday, Governor Christie signed the legislation into law, and the door is now open to smaller casinos in the region.

“All the indications from Hard Rock, including conversations this week, is that they are poised to take advantage of the botique-casino bill,” began State Senator James Whelan (D-Atlantic). “…they [Hard Rock] look forward to moving on it and putting some people to work.”

The measure that passed was written to allow 200-room hotel casinos to be established. These casinos will be built with no more than 20,000 square feet of casino, or they can opt for 30,000 square feet of casino, with at least 200 hotel rooms, though they must expand to at least 500 hotel rooms within the first five years of their receiving their license.

The casino that Hard Rock has planned will hold at least the 200 rooms, but fewer than 500. They will also be incorporating restaurants, nightclubs, a swimming pool, and a spa.

Mount Airy Casino Fined For Underage Gambling

Friday, January 7th, 2011

January 7th, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has recently slapped Mount Airy Casino with a fine worth $70,000 dollars. The Gaming Control Board has alleged that the casino allowed a pair of underage gamblers in the gaming floor on two different occasions.

The Gaming Control Board has been given Mount Airy Casino its second fine for underage gambling. The previous instance of Mount Airy being punished came in March 2010 when the gaming control board fined the casino for six different instances of allowing gamblers under the age of 21 to participate in casino games.

Mount Airy’s most recent fines came because of an incident on February 28th and August 22nd. On February 38th, a 16 year old female, accompanied by her mother, visited the gaming floor and gambled on slot machines for roughly 53 minutes. A similar incident occurred on August 22nd, where a 15 year old female, also with relatives, gambled on slot machines and table games alike. This female was on the gaming floor for three hours prior to being apprehended not by a casino employee, but by a member of the Gaming Control Board’s Casino Compliance Representative.

In addition to the fine that has recently been levied against the casino, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has recently added three people to the involuntary self exclusion list. Due to these recent additions, a total of ten people are on the involuntary self exclusion list.

The exclusion list was designed in order to prevent pathological, problem, or criminal gamblers from participating in casino games. Two of the three people added to the list were put on due to leaving young children locked in a car while gambling.

Big Jackpots Hit Several American Casinos

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

January 2nd, 2011 – by Glen Farmer

A pair of casinos in the United States have recently paid out enormous jackpots to several lucky winners. Between the two, over $10 million dollars had been won by big winners.

In California, a San Leandro firefighter won an enormous surprise. In starting the new year, Dale Valentine will be a millionaire. The ex-firefighter’s civil service paid off when he won $8.4 million dollars playing a Megabucks slot machine at the Twin Pine Casino.

Official at the casino stated that Valentine owns a vacation home in the region, and is subsequently a regular at the casino. According to the marketing director of the casino, Tim McGlynn, the slot machine Megabucks produces multi-million dollar payouts periodically throughout the year, generally no more than twice.

In Milwaukee, another man won a smaller yet equally as bountiful jackpot. The Milwaukee man will start his year $2.7 million dollars richer due to a jackpot won in the casino.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, won playing a $5 dollar slot machine on Thursday at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino.

Many players are unaware than online casinos offer equally large jackpots. In the case of the Jackpot Pinatas slot game, players through many RTG casinos can earn a jackpot worth over $6 million.

Pennsylvania Casinos To Give Tax Cuts To Home Owners

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

December 29th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

When the Pennsylvania casino industry was established, homeowners had been told to expect revenue from the casinos to help by providing tax breaks. The property tax breaks can now be expected in the year of 2011.

Halfway through the fiscal year, homeowners are now expecting to receive breaks on their property taxes. It is expected that homeowners will receive, on average, approximately $157 dollars in tax breaks.

Relief to homeowners will vary from one school district to the next. The districts with weaker tax bases and lower personal incomes are expected to see more relief for their property taxes.

Unfortunately, the state’s budget deficit is expected to lead to employee layoffs, despite the fact that the Governor of the Commonwealth said that the inclusion of table games into the state’s casinos would prevent job cuts of state employees.

In a budget briefing on Thursday, Governor Rendell said that the state could end the fiscal year with a budget deficit of $63 million dollars. The fiscal year ends of June 30th.

Over the last two years, a total of nearly 5,000 state government jobs had been cut.

Pennsylvania’s budget deficit had dropped significantly, however. The projected deficit dropped from $3.2 billion to $1.2 billion.

Michigan Brings Indian Tribe To Court To Contest Casino

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

December 23rd, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

The Bay Mills Indians have stated that they are prepared to defend themselves in federal court against the lawsuits that are set to attempt to close down the new casino on Michigan’s lower Peninsula.

The Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians had issued a statement Wednesday in an effort to shut down the casino that opened in November in Vanderbilt. These opponents have made the claim that the casino, due to it being located off of the Bay Mills reservation, is illegal and should not remain open.

The Odawa are seeking to have the casino and its 40 slot machines shut down. The Michigan attorney general’s office sued Tuesday in order to close the casino down, and now the Odawa are filing suit in order to shut down the casino.

The Bay Mills Indians have disagreed, stating that the casino can legally operate in its current location, despite being off of the reservation.

The state and opposing tribes feel that the casino is not legally authorized under state or federal law.

Casino Control Commission Appointees Rejected By Ohio Senate

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

December 22nd, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

The casino commission in Ohio has once again hit a snag, this time on account of the state’s Senate. The Republican controlled Ohio senate rejected the appointment of each member of the Ohio Casino Control Commission.

Governor Ted Strickland, in the lame-duck season, appointed 71 people to different state boards, including the seven members of the Ohio Casino Control Commission. Every member of the Casino Control Member, including the panel’s chairman, had been rejected. Charles “Rocky” Saxbe, an attorney in Columbus, had been the appointed chairman.

An 18-12 vote by the state’s Senate rejected each of the nominees. According to Senate President BIll Harris (R-Ashland), the Senate would reject any appointee in key policy positions so that Republican Governor Elect John Kasich could select his own people for the positions that are open.

Kasich has already stated that he would like to have an opinion on who will comprise the Casino Control Commission, a group established by the state legislature to act as overseers to the casinos that were approved by voters. Delays have mired the entire affair, and the delay of the commission is likely to delay it further – licenses and regulation need be established prior to the creation of the casinos.

In Ohio, casinos were approved for Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo.

Kansas Casino Project Granted To Peninsula Gaming

Monday, December 20th, 2010

December 20th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

The Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review Board has granted a license to Peninsula Gaming for the Sumner County casino on Wednesday. The $260 million dollar casino proposal by Peninsula was chosen due to the suspicion that the casino will carry potential for generating more revenue than the competition.

A 6 to 1 vote by the Kansas Lottery Gaming Facility Review board supported Peninsula Gaming casino, which was chosen instead of the $280 million dollar proposal from Global Gaming Solutions, a company owned by the Chickasaw Nation.

The Racing and Gaming Commission must now sign off on the winning proposal. A background check will take place before it is actually approved. To date, no proposal had been denied by the Gaming Commission, though this could change with the Peninsula Gaming proposal. Two executives from the company have recently been charged with misdemeanor counts of violating Iowan campaign finance laws.

The company has, to date, denied breaking the law.

According to projections, the casino is estimated to generate approximately $192 million in revenue per year, which would be compared to the $141 million that Global Gaming Solutions’ casino would generate – a 27 percent difference.

The gap had proven even larger by other estimates.

It will still take a few years in order for the casino to be established.

Oil Spill Claims Could Come To Casino Workers

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

December 14th, 2010 – by Glen Farmer

After a series of protests regarding the distribution of funds related to oil spill compensations, casino employees may soon be entitled to receive reparations for damages related to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Recently, the agency charged with the task of paying Gulf of Mexico oil spill claims has been seeking information from casinos that could ultimately be used to distribute funds to potential claimants who had been denied damage claims in the past.

Over the next week, casino employees should be receiving letters that detail the options that casino employees have in the claims process.

Mississippi casino employees made the claim that the oil spill had adversely affected their ability to earn. Tips and hourly wages are reported to be down due to the oil spill.

In order to prove that casino employees are deserving of the money from the claims, they will have to show what tips would have been if the oil spill had never occurred.

According to Attorney Kenneth Feinberg, the main who oversees the claims funds, the casino employees had been rejected due to revenue generally being up. Casino employees retorted with the fact that, although the casino is doing well, the employees may be suffering from reduced voluntary spending.
